چکیده

INTRODUCTION Surface tension is an inherently dominant force in the microscale. Electrocapillarity, the modification of surface tension by applying an electric field, has received renewed attention because of its potential usefulness in microfluidics. Pollack et al. demonstrated a microactuator for rapid manipulation of discrete microdroplets by direct electric control of the surface tension. [1] Berge and Peseux demonstrated the use of electrocapillarity in order to change the contact angle of a transparent drop, creating a lens of variable focal length. [2] Prins et al. showed the control of fluid motion by electrocapillary pressure in three-dimensional structures containing thousands of microchannels. [3] Electrowetting was first demonstrated by Berge. [4] The general experiment scheme for electrowetting on dielectrics (EWOD) is shown in Figure 1.

Wireless Ewod (electrowetting-on-dielectric) Device Using Planar Coils

This paper describes development and experimental verifications of wireless powering for EWOD microfluidics. First, the wireless powering is achieved by planar PCB coils (not by bulky, spool-type, conventional coils), resulting in seamless integration with EWOD array electrodes on a single and compact chip. Second, the obtained voltage for wireless EWOD is over 230Vrms, much higher than typical...

Droplets by Electrowetting-Based Actuation for Digital Microfluidic Circuits

This paper reports the completion of four fundamental fluidic operations considered essential to build digital microfluidic circuits, which can be used for lab-on-a-chip or micro total analysis system ( TAS): 1) creating, 2) transporting, 3) cutting, and 4) merging liquid droplets, all by electrowetting, i.e., controlling the wetting property of the surface through electric potential. The surfa...

A High Fundamental Frequency Quartz Crystal Biosensor Integrated into an Electro-wetting-on-dielectrics Based Lab-on-a-chip

We demonstrate the operation of an Electro Wetting on Dielectrics (EWOD) hybrid lab-on-a-chip system by utilizing a Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) resonator as mass-sensitive sensor. We have tested the formation of a phosphorlipid monolayer out of an aqueous buffer suspension onto the integrated sensor. The altered mass load resulted in a shift of the resonance frequencies. Subsequently, the...

Water-oil core-shell droplets for electrowetting-based digital microfluidic devices.

Digital microfluidics based on electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) has recently emerged as one of the most promising technologies to realize integrated and highly flexible lab-on-a-chip systems. In such EWOD-based digital microfluidic devices, the aqueous droplets have traditionally been manipulated either directly in air or in an immiscible fluid such as silicone oil. However, both transportin...

All-electronic droplet generation on-chip with real-time feedback control for EWOD digital microfluidics.

Electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) actuation enables digital (or droplet) microfluidics where small packets of liquids are manipulated on a two-dimensional surface. Due to its mechanical simplicity and low energy consumption, EWOD holds particular promise for portable systems. To improve volume precision of the droplets, which is desired for quantitative applications such as biochemical assays...
